What is cataract?

A cataract is the natural clouding of the eye's crystalline lens, most often due to ageing. It causes blurred vision, glare from headlights, faded colours and difficulty reading. The only definitive treatment is surgical removal of the cloudy lens and replacement with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

How Dr. Shantanu performs cataract surgery — step by step

1. Detailed pre-operative work-up including optical biometry, corneal topography, macular OCT and endothelial cell count. 2. On surgery day — topical anaesthesia drops (no injection), micro-incision of 2.2 mm at the corneal edge. 3. Continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis creates a perfectly circular window into the lens capsule. 4. Torsional phacoemulsification gently emulsifies and removes the cloudy nucleus and cortex. 5. The chosen intraocular lens is injected through the micro-incision and centred in the capsular bag. 6. No stitches are required — the incision is self-sealing. The whole procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes. Both eyes are typically operated on 1 week apart.

A modern phaco platform with active-fluidics and torsional ultrasound — a gentle, energy-efficient technique that protects the corneal endothelium and speeds visual recovery. IOL options cover the full clinical range: aspheric monofocal, toric (for astigmatism correction), Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) for intermediate range, and trifocal for near-intermediate-distance vision. Recovery timeline — day by day

Day 0 (surgery day): Rest, avoid rubbing, wear the protective shield while sleeping. Day 1: Post-op review; most patients read the eye chart at 6/9 or better. Week 1: Antibiotic drops end; steroid drops taper for 3 more weeks. Week 2: Resume driving, gentle exercise; keep water out of the eye. Week 4: Full recovery; second-eye surgery (if needed) is typically scheduled here. Month 3: Final glasses prescription (if any) is issued.

Cataract surgery is fully covered by every major Indian health insurer, ESIC and Ayushman Bharat (within their applicable limits). Cashless approval is arranged on-site by our front desk.
