Blurred vision — causes, urgency and next steps

Blurred vision is one of the most common reasons patients come to us. The right next step depends heavily on how it started (sudden vs gradual), whether one or both eyes are affected, and whether there is any pain, flashes or floaters.

Possible causes

What can cause this — and how each feels different.

Refractive error

Uncorrected spectacle number, presbyopia after 40, or an outdated prescription. Usually painless and gradual.

Cataract

Slow, painless clouding of the lens — often described as 'like looking through a foggy window'.

Dry eye

Blurring that comes and goes, worse with screens, better after blinking or lubricant drops.

Diabetic macular oedema

Blurred central vision in a person with diabetes — needs a retina check with OCT.

Retinal problems

Vein occlusion, macular hole, wet AMD — usually more sudden and one eye at a time.

Neurological causes

Rare, but sudden blurring with headache or weakness always deserves an urgent review.

Urgency guide

When to seek care — a practical guide.

Use the guide below only as a starting point. If you are unsure, run the free AI Symptom Checker or simply message us on WhatsApp — we would rather see you and reassure you than miss something serious.

Emergency
Sudden painful blurring, or new blurring with flashes and a black shadow — get to an eye emergency the same day.
Urgent
Blurring in one eye that came on over 24-48 hours, or in a diabetic patient — see us within 24-48 hours.
Routine
Gradual blurring over months, both eyes, no pain — book a routine consultation and refraction check.
Frequently asked

Questions patients ask us most.

Can blurred vision be fixed with glasses?

Sometimes yes — if the cause is a refractive error. But blurring that does not clear with the right glasses always needs an examination to look for cataract, retinal or corneal causes.

Is diabetic blurred vision reversible?

Often yes if it is caught early. Diabetic macular oedema responds well to anti-VEGF injections and laser, and blood-sugar control alone can improve mild cases.

How soon should I see a doctor for blurred vision?

If it is sudden, painful, or in one eye only — the same day. If it is gradual and both eyes over weeks or months — book a routine appointment.
