Paediatric ophthalmologist · Varanasi

Best paediatric eye specialist in Varanasi

A child's visual system continues to develop until age 8 — anything that blurs one eye's image during those years (an uncorrected refraction, a squint, a cataract, a droopy eyelid) can cause amblyopia, or 'lazy eye', that no adult surgery can reverse. Paediatric ophthalmology is a race against a closing developmental window.

Why patients choose us for this care

Cycloplegic refraction, correctly done

Children accommodate — a routine refraction misses half their prescription. Every child under 12 is refracted after 3 doses of cyclopentylate — the international standard.

Squint surgery experience

Featured in Dainik Jagran (Purvanchal edition, July 2026) for the region's first modern squint programme with adjustable-suture techniques for adult squint and single-stage bilateral for children.

ROP screening for NICU graduates

Retinopathy of prematurity screening on-site or on-visit to neonatal ICUs across Varanasi and Chandauli. Follow-up per RCOphth guidelines.

Patient-friendly OPD

Books, animated targets, and a paediatric refraction room designed so children do not associate the ophthalmologist with fear.

Written parent communication

Every child leaves with a written diagnosis, glasses prescription (if any), amblyopia therapy plan, and next-review date — school records, referral letters and medical certificates included.

Real (anonymised) case scenarios from our clinic

The 5-year-old whose 'left eye keeps drifting outward'

Cycloplegic refraction was normal. Cover-test confirmed intermittent exotropia with reduced fusion. Bilateral lateral rectus recession + orthoptic exercises — full alignment at 6 months, restored 3D vision.

The 8-year-old failing school with 'blurry blackboard'

Discovered as a −5 D myope who had never been refracted. Started on properly-cut single-vision progressives + 6-monthly axial length monitoring; myopia progression halved.

The 28-week preterm, 4-week-old baby from NICU

First ROP screen picked up stage 2 zone II disease. Anti-VEGF injection with follow-up — retina regressed fully; child now reads normally at age 3.

You should consult if you have any of these

  • Any deviation of one eye — even intermittent
  • Squinting one eye or head tilt in bright light
  • Failed school vision test
  • Family history of squint, amblyopia or paediatric cataract
  • Preterm baby < 34 weeks or < 1750 g birth weight
  • Sitting too close to the TV / holding books very close
  • White pupil in a flash photograph (leukocoria — urgent)

What a consultation actually looks like

  1. 1
    History from parents
    Onset, family, developmental milestones.
  2. 2
    Vision estimation (age-appropriate charts)
    Sheridan-Gardiner, Lea symbols, or Snellen.
  3. 3
    Cover-uncover test + prism cover
    Detects and measures any squint.
  4. 4
    Cycloplegic refraction
After 3 doses of cyclopentylate over 1 hour.
  5. 5
    Fundus examination
    In infants, always dilated indirect.
  6. 6
    Written plan for parents
Diagnosis, glasses if needed, review schedule.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should my child have their first eye check?
+
Every newborn should get a red-reflex check by the paediatrician. First formal ophthalmologist visit at 6 months (routine) or immediately if any concern. Then at 3 years and before starting school.
Can amblyopia (lazy eye) be treated in adults?
+
Response to occlusion therapy drops off sharply after age 8. Some newer research suggests limited plasticity into adulthood using perceptual learning, but for classical amblyopia the developmental window closes around age 8.
Will my child outgrow the squint?
+
Congenital and infantile squint does not spontaneously resolve. Accommodative squint (from uncorrected long-sightedness) does respond to glasses alone. A squint that appears after age 2 or an intermittent squint that becomes constant needs evaluation urgently.
Are contact lenses safe for children?
+
Yes, from around age 8 for daily-wear soft lenses. Rigid gas permeable lenses are used from age 5 in specific cases (post-cataract, high myopia). Hygiene is the biggest determinant of safety.
How is squint surgery done in children?
+
Under general anaesthesia, 45-60 minute procedure, no admission. The extra-ocular muscles are recessed or resected to realign the eye. Recovery is 1 week. Children return to school within 3–4 days.
